REFRESHMENT OF THE SELF !

Hushhh...at last we come to the end of the 2020. Let's try to start a new year with a resolution of eat, pray and love! As in a relationship, a toxic person is fully capable of ruining the relation and hurting others. When we eat, a toxic diet can also ruin our health. In Ayurvedic language, we say that food is our first medicine. The food that we eat undergo so many processes before and after we have it. In order to convert the food that we eat into flesh, bones and blood, our body works really hard. Human body has different organs that participate in this processing. It starts right inside our mouth wherein there is saliva to help the acceptance of food. Then, different types of foods are processed by different enzymes secreted by different organs. For example, carbohydrate is broken down into glucose by amylase that is a prominent digestive enzyme. The body organs just act like a filter where it absorbs whatever it need and throw out the unwanted component of food. The major organs which play an important role in digestion are liver, gastrointestinal tract, kidney and lungs. Kidney is responsible for filtering out the fluid, liver as well as gastrointestinal tract for filtering out the food and lungs filter out the air that we breath. We know very well that after a certain time point of continuous activity, we need rest. Similarly, human body needs to refresh and revitalize. It needs to rebuild. Thus, our vital organs need a refreshment after a certain time duration of continuous activity. Ayurveda calls it "Shodhana" means purification. In other words, simply a detoxification. We often hear that antioxidants plays an important role to remove the free radicals in the blood that are produced by certain causative factors such as stress. We will now see how exactly a detoxification is considered as an elementary step in the treatment. It is not only the part of treatment, but also it can be a treatment itself! Many times, in ayurvedic literature it is mentioned that any kind of a disease or disorder starts from impairment in digestion. The digestive impairment releases toxins in the body. And this persistent toxin built up if not treated subsequently causes the disease to manifest. The organs which have a key role in filtration can accumulate the toxins with it's diligent work throughout day and night. Therefore, a body always needs a procedure called detoxification or purification. There are certain herbs that help the process of detoxification. Detoxification is certainly related to longevity of life. One of my favorites is 'Giloy'! It has a sanskrit name 'Amrut' which cannot let you die and which can make you immortal! It has those heart shaped leaves which actually look like money plants. It is a climbing shrub with several elongated twining branches. The single herb is capable of balancing all three humors (vata, pitta and kapha). Many times it gives excellent results in weight loss when taken empty stomach. It comes in various forms such as juice, decoction, powder and tablets. It is a natural source of calcium and hemoglobin. It is one of the excellent anti-pyretic which means it reduces your fever. It is the superb detox herb. It almost works for everything!

I am sure, that instead of money-plant; henceforth, you would want to grow this amazing shrub in your garden or home.

Another example of detox is a combination of herbs called Triphala. Triphala has three herbs wise gooseberry (Amala), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and Bahera (Terminalia bellirica). Amala reduces pitta (acidity). It is vitamin C so that it helps you to strengthen your immunity. Haritaki reduces vata which means it removes any impairment in the digestion. I see that many people are relieved from hard stools if they consume this herb. Bahera reduces kapha. Thus, Triphala is another example of brilliant detox as it maintains the balance of all three humors. It is one of the best remedies used for hair fall.

There are remedies that work for kidney detox. One such example is Chandraprabha Vati. There are also remedies that work for liver detox. E.g. Arogyavardhini. It is always beneficial if you consult a reliable ayurvedic doctor if you want to have a nice detox. Tulasi like herbs purify the organ like lungs. Meditation can be called detox for the mind. Even. pranayama are detoxification procedures!

Now, comes my recommendation! Here is one detox formulation (single tablet) by Dhanwantari, Satara. It has all those elegant herbs like Haridra (turmeric), Giloy, Lotus flower, Black pepper and many more. It is just like a miracle in Ayurveda!
